Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is a condition where one sweats more than is required physiologically by the body.  Sweating is used to regulate the body’s temperature, cooling it down as required.  Sweat is produced by sweat glands which are located in the skin.  Hyperhidrosis has several treatment options available, one of which is the use of anti-wrinkle injections to treat this condition.  After careful consultation I will discuss which method is better for your condition.

Treatment with anti- wrinkle injections

The anti wrinkle injections work by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter,  acetylcholine, from the nerve endings which causes glands to produce sweat. The anti- wrinkle injections are placed in to the skin to treat hyperhidrosis.   Anti wrinkle  injections work well for armpit (axillary) hyperhidrosis.  Excessive sweating is reduced within days.

The Procedure

The armpit is injected with very fine needles into the area of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis.  Often no anaesthetic is required for the armpits as there is minimal discomfort.  This usually results in a dramatic reduction or total elimination of sweating in the area treated for approximately six to twelve months.

Safety

The prescription substance is derived from natural, purified protein. The substance has been used safely for more than 20 years in 80 countries to treat different medical conditions.

Post procedure

Following the procedure, the area may be red or bruised.  Any bruising can take a week to settle.  Patients can resume normal activity straight after the procedure. The excessive sweating normally begins to reduce by the following day and maximum effect is realised by one to two weeks.

Side effects

There are a few possible side effects however they do not happen very often. Bruising and tenderness at the injection site may occur but this normally resolves after a week.  Compensatory hyperhidrosis (increased sweating in other areas) is rare with this treatment and is mild and temporary if it occurs.  This treatment should not be used in pregnancy,  during breast feeding or in patients with certain neuromuscular disorders.
